Physical Therapy is the treatment of disease, injury, or deformity by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise rather than by drugs or surgery. Physical therapy is performed by a licensed physical therapist (PT) or a licensed physical therapy assistant (PTA). PT’s are healthcare professionals who diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to the very oldest, who have medical problems or other health-related conditions, illnesses, or injuries that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities as well as they would like in their daily lives. PTs examine each individual and develop a plan, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.
Aquatic Therapy is the practice of physical therapy performed while floating, partially submerged, or fully submerged in water. Rehabilitation commonly focuses on mending patients after injury or those with chronic illness. The buoyancy, support and accommodating resistance of the water enhance exercise and create a safe environment for progressive rehabilitation. The temperature of the water prompts muscle relaxation, facilitates stretch and generally reduces the sensation of pain. Patients who have had difficulty with traditional therapy often show improvement with aquatic therapy. Aquatic therapy can benefit patients with conditions such as arthritis, back/neck pain, sprains, strains, or fractures, and for individuals recovering from surgery or seeking a preventative fitness program.
